TEXAS ACRE IN SNOW, by LORA BETH PENNINGTON First Line: Look! Nature is planting snow-flowers Last Line: Only waiting, waiting silence. Subject(s): Snow | ||||||||
Look! Nature is planting snow-flowers On treetops and garden swinging gates, And the crest of a waiting silent bird. There is no sound... Only waiting, waiting silence. White labyrinths, white loopholes, White gargoyles...and other things are hanging, Aged, With expressions as promising as lottery tickets. Where poplars and hackberries stood An hour ago. This snow is falling cross-legged: There is no east, no west, Or north, or south. An old, old woman sits motionless, Forgetting her wares. She is a Miniature Buddha, her trinkets Little statues, and idols. She is an old precious antique, Sculptured in snow for an hour. There is no sound... An old, old woman, sitting cross-legged In the snow, fallen cross-legged... Only waiting, waiting silence. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BRIGHT SUN AFTER HEAVY SNOW by JANE KENYON SNOW FALLING THROUGH FOG by WILLIAM MATTHEWS THE SNOW FAIRY by CLAUDE MCKAY NOT ONLY ESKIMOS by LISEL MUELLER SONNET TO MARC IN MODERN SPAIN by LORA BETH PENNINGTON DOMESDAY BOOK: CHARLES WARREN, THE SHERIFF by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
