THE GHOST OF YOUR WASTED PAST, by J. A. PETERSON First Line: You may scoff at ghosts for all I care Last Line: The ghost of your wasted past. Subject(s): Ghosts; Life; Past; South Dakota; Supernatural | ||||||||
You may scoff at ghosts for all I care And sneer at folks who see Their whitened forms or ethereal forms Behind some stone, or house, or tree. You may never see a miser's ghost, Or the ghost of a murdered wife; But scoff as you will, some day you'll meet The ghost of your wasted life. He'll stare at you when you sit alone In your chair by the smoldering fire. But try to disown him, you who dare, And he'll call you cheat and liar. He'll call to mind things left undone, And kind words left unsaid. He will not leave you at the bridge, But follow you home to bed. You may scoff at ghosts for all I care, But even your sneers won't last, When you're face to face with your own ghost The ghost of your wasted past. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE MOTHS: 1.
