SINCE NELLIE GOT THE HOOK, by WILLIAM A. PHELON First Line: A cloud of sorrow darks the house Last Line: (chorus) Subject(s): Family Life; Grief; Relatives; Sorrow; Sadness | ||||||||
(Music and orchestration of this touching ballad can be had by applying to Bozeman Bulger, the dramatic writer.) A CLOUD of sorrow darks the house, Ma's eyes are filled with tears, And father's thirst has died away He takes but seven beers. A stranger asks us what is wrong We beg him not to look, For sadness is our middle name Since Nellie got the hook. (Chorus) There is no joy for Nellie now, Our darling lovey-girl But we are hoping that he chokes The man who hooked our pearl! Oh, who so heartless as to say: "Go home and learn to cook?" There is no use of living now, Since Nellie got the hook. She dreamed about the stage, and said She'd make Maude Adams quit So mother made a lovely dress, You ought to see the fit. She got a chance for Friday night, Her name they gladly took Oh, who would think the cruel brutes Would spear her on the hook? (Chorus) The music played, she got her cue, She walked upon the stage, And all those wicked villains bawled Like bulls in wildest rage! Her friends were false and did not cheer, Our darling was forsook A big tomato binged her brow, Then Nellie got the hook! (Chorus) Oh, say not, stranger, that her dreams Are busted up the back Give words of comfort, we implore, Nor heave the wanton crack. For sorrow holds us by the toes, Our tears flow like a brook The world is cold and very dark Since Nellie got the hook!
