I WOULD not be a boy again, Nor woo Romance, nor yearn nor sigh For castle situate in Spain, Nor, pris'ner, walk in Love's strait chain, Nor chase Chimaerae cruel, shy... I would not be a boy again. Embosom'd serpent, source of pain, I shun, nor seek, 'neath shimmering sky, For castle situate in Spain. No more black locks shall be my bane, Nor dusky cheeks, nor darkling eye ... I would not be a boy again. To-day I glance with dour disdain On Cupid, neither seek nor spy For castle situate in Spain. Grown realisthis chamberlain No moreI live in liberty ... I would not be a boy again. Yet, God forgive me! false and vain My speech. Sad simpleton, I cry For castle situate in Spain. Since, seeing you, trick'd, trapped and ta'en, Within my very teeth I lie! A boy indeed, sad fool, fierce-fain For castle situate in Spain. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...IN ABEYANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN A VACANT HOUSE by PHILIP LEVINE SUNDAY ALONE IN A FIFTH FLOOR APARTMENT, CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS SILENCE LIKE COOL SAND by PAT MORA THE HONEY BEAR by EILEEN MYLES A BALLADE OF GREEN FIELDS; FOR F.W.M. by AUSTIN PHILIPS |
