MAGNOLIA GRANDIFLORA, by CORA CASE PORTER First Line: Down south / the wind croons low Last Line: Magnolia grandiflora. Subject(s): Magnolias; Southern States; South (u.s.) | ||||||||
Down South The wind croons low To the sleeping earth, Prickling with lust of birth; In leafy bower Sacred to the hour Fragrant trees Scatter incense on the earth. Down South I heard the dark Find voice in song of bird; Light touched its wing But not its sight Between the rise and rest Of large-eyed night. Down South As here I lie In ecstasy expectant, My pulse is stilled; Petals luminous Drift subtle, sure From a Dryadic living thing -- Magnolia Grandiflora. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE MYSTIC RIVER by GALWAY KINNELL ENTERING THE SOUTH by LUCILLE CLIFTON SNAPSHOTS OF THE COTTON SOUTH by FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS JULY IN GEORGY by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON O SOUTHLAND! by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON MY SOUTH: 1.
