A little head of curly gold-brown hair I used to pass at morning on my way, With blue-gray eyes and baby smile -- and there A new light seemed to shine upon the day, And all the hours were bright. She will not wave her little flower-like hand At me again, or flirt her gray-blue eyes -- And yet I know I only understand In part the aching emptiness that lies In lives so near her own. Now morning brings us but the memory Of other mornings when we saw her smile; But lingering light through all our lives shall be, Because we had her here a little while -- A bit of Heaven itself. So while we grieve that she is gone away, We cannot feel the tiny girl is dead; We know we'll read life's mystery some day Limned in the sunshine of that gold-brown head, When tears are wiped away. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SONOMA FIRE by JANE HIRSHFIELD AS THE SPARKS FLY UPWARDS by JOHN HOLLANDER WHAT GREAT GRIEF HAS MADE THE EMPRESS MUTE by JUNE JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 19 by JAMES JOYCE |
