A little head of curly gold-brown hair
I used to pass at morning on my way,
With blue-gray eyes and baby smile -- and there
A new light seemed to shine upon the day,
And all the hours were bright.

She will not wave her little flower-like hand
At me again, or flirt her gray-blue eyes --
And yet I know I only understand
In part the aching emptiness that lies
In lives so near her own.

Now morning brings us but the memory
Of other mornings when we saw her smile;
But lingering light through all our lives shall be,
Because we had her here a little while --
A bit of Heaven itself.

So while we grieve that she is gone away,
We cannot feel the tiny girl is dead;
We know we'll read life's mystery some day
Limned in the sunshine of that gold-brown head,
When tears are wiped away.
