I wrote of simple things --
The fluffiness of dandelion heads
Against a kiddie's cheek, the feeling in your throat
The first few nights you stay away from home,
The soggy sweetness of a summer lawn
After a dripping rain.
"How little this poor versifier knows
Of life," the critics sneered.
Angered, I plunged into the swirl of things. I hear
The sickening talk of children who are overwise,
Laughter of men whose god is physical,
Despair, that makes the bottom of the river seem
No blacker than its edge.
On easy terms with life,
I know too much to write.
