TRIUMPHANT LIFE AGAIN, by CARMEN NELSON RICHARDS First Line: Last week I sat in thoughtful mood, alone Last Line: And gay life reigns where late death's ruin lay. Subject(s): Happiness; Nature; Sonnet (as Literary Form); Joy; Delight | ||||||||
Last week I sat in thoughtful mood, alone, Beside the grave of one most dear to me. The cherished voice I could not hear. Nor see The radiant smile that once around me shone; Instead -- a name upon a crumbling stone. The barren branches of a white birch tree Suggested what my heritage would be When final dissolution claimed its own. I come again. The sun, the fruitful earth Have strewn a garden round the shrine. Soft grass And fragrant blooms unfold where ruled decay! Spring breezes strum their chords. The birds in mirth Trill happy songs; leaves crown the tree en masse; And gay life reigns where late death's ruin lay. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE STUDY OF HAPPINESS by KENNETH KOCH SO MUCH HAPPINESS by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE CROWD CONDITIONS by JOHN ASHBERY I WILL NOT BE CLAIMED by MARVIN BELL THE BOOK OF THE DEAD MAN (#21): 1.
