THE COUNTERPANE, by MABEL KINGSLEY RICHARDSON First Line: Who were you, with the busy, patient hands Last Line: The simple pattern of your peerless days. Subject(s): Mothers & Daughters | ||||||||
Who were you, with the busy, patient hands That spun and wove the even fadeless thread In faultless pattern? Was it for bridal bed You sang untiring at your tasks' demands? Was it for hire?watching the trickling sands In some slow glass? Or daughter duty led? Or goodly dame with mother-haloed head? How strangely silent are old wonderlands! Down the long vista of the misty years Your children look to watch you spin and weave, Your flying shuttle glinting through the haze. Cut lie a cameo, the vision clears, Warmly remembering that you gift-wise leave The simple pattern of your peerless days. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FAWN BEFORE DOW SEASON by JOAN LARKIN ONE FOR ALL NEWBORNS by THYLIAS MOSS FIRST THANKSGIVING by SHARON OLDS HIGH SCHOOL SENIOR by SHARON OLDS CHANEL NO. 5 by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR THE GLASS ESSAY by ANNE CARSON A LETTER TO MARY by MABEL KINGSLEY RICHARDSON |
