NIGHT SONG, by ALICE PHELPS RIDER First Line: Night comes. / the dream lake pales into a murmured song Last Line: Night glows. Subject(s): Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
Night comes. The dream lake pales into a murmured song; The slender rushes stir As with a whisper from some unseen space. The dream lake pulses with the sudden whir Of tiny breezes, flitting in the place Where ghosts, mist-washed with fancies, breathe again Encircled with a throng Of memories. Night comes. Night glows. The saffron moon is riding, even now The breathless air is filled with mystery More potent than the gleaming magic light Of an Aladdin's lamp. A lone bird cries Into the moon washed night And then is still. The south wind sighs A bit, and with a sudden thrill The waves in ripples dance upon the shore. The lake wakes not from dreams of other moons ... Peace holds the world. Night glows. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE |
