MY WAGE, by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE Poet's Biography First Line: I bargained with life for a penny Last Line: Life would have paid. Alternate Author Name(s): Scollard, Clinton, Mrs. | |||
I BARGAINED with Life for a penny, And Life would pay no more, However I begged at evening When I counted my scanty store; For Life is a just employer, He gives you what you ask, But once you have set the wages, Why, you must bear the task. I worked for a menial's hire, Only to learn, dismayed, That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have paid. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALVARY by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE DEBT[S] by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE THE ONSET; A CALIFORNIA BEACH by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE THE SECRET by JESSIE BELL RITTENHOUSE TRANSPOSITIONS by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON JONES'S PRIVATE ARGYMENT by SIDNEY LANIER THE DESIRE OF NATIONS by EDWIN MARKHAM WHEN LOVE GOES by SARA TEASDALE DEWEY AT MANILA [MAY 1, 1898] by ROBERT UNDERWOOD JOHNSON |
