This is my joy. My babe thrice blest,
Warm, downy head close to my breast.
Clear eyes that look in faith to me
For things desired—all needs that he
Requires to live—his food, his rest.

Then older grown, at time's behest,
To join young blood upon the crest
Of thought and work—efficiency—
This is my joy.

My son! O, just to know the best
I gave, returns in you; the quest
I failed, you carry on. You see
The vision; gather from life's tree
The fruits I crave but may not wrest.
This is my joy.
