THE OLD COUPLE, by
First Line: He wanders about the house
Last Line: Forty years ago.)
Subject(s): Old Age; Togetherness

He wanders about the house
Without his shirt,
Underwear rolled up to his elbows,
Chews tobacco and spits in the coal bucket.

(His horse was the fastest,
His buggy the newest,
His hat the jauntiest,
His shoes the shiniest,
Forty years ago.)

Day in and day out
She wears the same kind of drab dress;
Her scant gray hair rolled in a tight
Knob on her head.

(Her dress was the gayest,
Her hat was the widest,
Her hair was the smoothest,
Her ankles the trimmest,
Forty years ago.)
