Alternate Author Name(s): Root, E. Merrill
Subject(s): Moon; Sun; Worship

I used to worship the Moon,
I sought her for the boon
Which her purple valleys keep
Of stagnant lunar sleep.

I longed to drift and lie
In that sepulchre of the sky,
In the peace of the shadow-strewn
Abysses of the Moon.

But the Sun, that golden eagle,
Soared up in splendid regal
Magnificent morning flight
In chase of immortal night.

And the gorgeous Sun soared higher,
And I turned to worship Fire --
The eagle's crimson brood
That break from the shells of wood.

Yet who can tell how long
The creative Sun is strong? --
I fear that my soul is strewn
With the pallor of the moon.
