DECADENT, by EDWARD MERRILL ROOT Poet's Biography First Line: I used to worship the moon Last Line: With the pallor of the moon. Alternate Author Name(s): Root, E. Merrill Subject(s): Moon; Sun; Worship | |||
I used to worship the Moon, I sought her for the boon Which her purple valleys keep Of stagnant lunar sleep. I longed to drift and lie In that sepulchre of the sky, In the peace of the shadow-strewn Abysses of the Moon. But the Sun, that golden eagle, Soared up in splendid regal Magnificent morning flight In chase of immortal night. And the gorgeous Sun soared higher, And I turned to worship Fire -- The eagle's crimson brood That break from the shells of wood. Yet who can tell how long The creative Sun is strong? -- I fear that my soul is strewn With the pallor of the moon. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...COMPANIONSHIP by MALTBIE DAVENPORT BABCOCK FOR I WILL CONSIDER YOUR DOG MOLLY by DAVID LEHMAN RUSSIAN CATHEDRAL by CLAUDE MCKAY LITTLE WHITE CHURCH by MARILYN NELSON A STEEPLE ON THE HOUSE by ROBERT FROST MATE (1) by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON ANSWER TO PRAYER by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS by GEORGE SANTAYANA CARPENTER OF ETERNITY by EDWARD MERRILL ROOT |
