THE CLOSED ROOM, by MARY PEASLEE ROOT First Line: Here, time that was dim years away Last Line: Nor closed the rusty door. Subject(s): Houses, Deserted | ||||||||
Here, time that was dim years away, Upon a mouldy loom, Rewove a story lost in dreams Left sleeping in the room. Remembering, the old walls leaned To hear a lullaby; But as to this, there is no one Who could so testify. The toys turned from their dusty past, Marched down a thoroughfare Of days almost forgotten now, Worn faded and threadbare. No sound, yet in that silence Where little ghosts had slept, A childish laughter sang again; A lonely woman wept. I vow no voice has spoken there, No step had crossed the floor, No hand had opened it that day Nor closed the rusty door. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BEYOND THE HUNTING WOODS by DONALD JUSTICE RUINS UNDER THE STARS by GALWAY KINNELL ABANDONED FARMHOUSE by TED KOOSER NORTH OF ALLIANCE by TED KOOSER BLUE SUNDAY by KENNETH REXROTH THE MIRROR IN THE WOODS by KENNETH REXROTH THE DESERTED HOUSE by MARY ELIZABETH COLERIDGE THE DESERTED HOUSE by ALFRED TENNYSON SONNET TO A FRIEND WHO ASKED, HOW I FELT ...
