BULBS FOR SPRING BLOOMING, by VIRGINIA RUSS First Line: Planting these inert globes in new dug mound Last Line: Still in deep crocus heart dwells the cool pearl. Subject(s): Plants; Planting; Planters | ||||||||
Planting these inert globes in new dug mound I know I soon shall lay you too in earth Who once lovingly sowed seeds of my birth. I press the small bulbs under the damp ground. Your hands are hard as these, your skin as brown. You loved the soil, the earth will love her son Cherishing your cold roots, when life is done, But you'll bear no spring blooms when you're laid down. Your cycle ends at last, as end it should, In fertile deepest peace saved for the good And for evil as well: it waits for all And yet: these dry bulbs so dead in the fall, Dull-fibered as bits of winter-worn wood, Hold store of renewal and new life's food. Nature was your faith, you said: Ponder this lore: Peel back the old dead husk and see the core Moist dew-drop fresh with concentrated store, Each seed holding the seed that shall bear more. Reluctant bones stiffen as senses whirl -- Still in deep crocus heart dwells the cool pearl. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...KILLING THE PLANTS by JANE KENYON NOW I AM A PLANT, A WEED by KATHERINE MANSFIELD TANKA DIARY (5) by HARRYETTE MULLEN |
