PLEDGE, by SYDNEY KING RUSSELL First Line: There is a part of you that I shall keep Last Line: My heart shall proudly keep, even from death. Subject(s): Time | ||||||||
There is a part of you that I shall keep When Time has softly hidden you from sight, When I forget to wonder or to weep That you have crossed the boundary of night; Though the grave candor of your searching gaze Elude me, and the magic of your voice Return no more to gladden somber days, I shall discover reason to rejoice. There is a memory that will not fade Though fugitive the years forever flee, A glowing word you whispered unafraid That Time can never snatch away from me. There is a part of you as frail as breath My heart shall proudly keep, even from death. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND A FRIEND by SYDNEY KING RUSSELL |
