RECOMPENSE, by LORA EVANS SAUER First Line: I've been where the mountains majestically stand Last Line: Where 'tis my abode to be. Subject(s): Kansas | ||||||||
I've been where the mountains majestically stand In contours against the skies, I've seen them enveloped in hazy mists; Aloof in grandeur they rise. These, and the azure of placid lakes, Or mirrors of silver sheen; I've seen them and vales in beauty stretch, Where rivers move serene. But God in his infinite wisdom Knows what is best for me, He gives me the prairies low and wide Where balmy winds sweep free, Where verdant fields like billows roll And cornfields, rustling low. What more is wealth than all of these; Beloved Kansas, I love it so. I love it for splendrous sunsets, And the rosy-tinted morn, For the glory of flowery meadows That cooling streams adorn, O pray! what's more enchanting Than the cardinals' sweet refrain? Dear to my heart are the myriad pools After the last long rain. As I stand upon these great plateaus To view this broad expanse, The horizon seems so far away At that momentary glance. There are zephyrs wafted here and there That fate decreed for me. O! for the charms of Kansas, Where 'tis my abode to be. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE KANSAS EMIGRANTS by JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER CRANES IN KANSAS by NORA B.
