SPAIN NEVER WAS SO BEAUTIFUL, by ALEX R. SCHMIDT First Line: Today an aching ferment stirs my breast Last Line: Spain never was so beautiful in spring. Subject(s): Spain | ||||||||
Today an aching ferment stirs my breast, Too full for spring, and the uncertain sigh Of pregnant wood cannot drowse my unrest, Nor close my vision to a more distant sky. The sound of common laughter, marching feet Is wanted more than this first mating-song That thrilled me once, no bird-call half so sweet As free men meeting, speaking in one tongue. This is their first spring and though they are hot With building barricades against the foe, And nursing burning hurts of shell and shot, They feel new kinship for all things that grow; As freemen they hear new notes when birds sing, Spain never was so beautiful in spring. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...FOR AL-TAYIB SALIH by KHALED MATTAWA MESSAGES AS TRANSLATION by MICHAEL S.
