MAY WALTERS, by HOLLIS WILLIAM SCHREIBER First Line: May walters had no special claim on life Last Line: One can't help feeling sorry for her, though. Alternate Author Name(s): Schreiber, H. W. Subject(s): Housewives | ||||||||
May Walters had no special claim on life; There wasn't any great thing she had done To earn a stay. True, she made Sam a wife As good as most wives are; and she was one Who wasn't scared of work -- she did her share By keeping him a home, and having Dan And Emily, and raising them with care, Harboring hope as only a mother can. May served her time, replenished life with birth, And having done her work, there was no reason Prolonging the inevitable, and so One day indoors, when apples were in season, She fell asleep while fruit dropped to the earth . . . One can't help feeling sorry for her, though. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OCCUPATION: HOUSEWIFE by PHYLLIS MCGINLEY GOODWIFE PLAYING THE VIRGINALS; AFTER A PAINTING BY DE WITTE by ELAINE TERRANOVA WASHING-DAY by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD I STOP WRITING THE POEM by TESS GALLAGHER THE FARMER'S BRIDE by CHARLOTTE MEW THE YOUNG HOUSEWIFE by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS WINTER: TEXAS PLAINS by HOLLIS WILLIAM SCHREIBER |
