THE SANDMAN'S SONG, by ANNA M. SEARCY First Line: The sandman comes from the moon on high Last Line: "tis the sandman's song in the ""lullaby." Subject(s): Children; Childhood | ||||||||
The sandman comes from the moon on high, Rocked in his boat called the "Lullaby." By his side he carried his sleepy-time sand And he scatters it widely on every hand; If any gets in a little child's eyes He can't help yawning, not if he tries. Then, if he climbs the wide hall stairs And kneels by his bed to say his prayers, And kisses his mother and says "Good night," And lets her turn out the nursery light; Then, if he listens he'll hear the song The sandman sings as he sails along: "Good little child, come ride with me In the 'Lullaby,' and you're sure to see Full many a lovely, wonderful sight, That only is real in dreams at night. Come see the fairies dance on the lawn, Till skies grow bright with the light at dawn. Come see the witches, their cauldrons boil And the little elfin workers toil. Oh, come and ride with me on high, Up in the beautiful moonlit sky We'll sail around from star to star, And find the lands where the little gnomes are. We'll visit the tiny, cheery sprites, Who dance in the flames on winter nights. We'll call on the queen of frost and snow, In her palace of ice where the wild winds blow; And we'll sail and fish in the milky way Till the dark runs off at the break of day. Then swiftly back in my staunch little bark I'll bring you home from your nighttime lark. "Then hushabye, hush, swing low, swing high," 'Tis the Sandman's song in the "Lullaby." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE THREE CHILDREN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN CHILDREN SELECTING BOOKS IN A LIBRARY by RANDALL JARRELL COME TO THE STONE ... by RANDALL JARRELL THE LOST WORLD by RANDALL JARRELL A SICK CHILD by RANDALL JARRELL CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS ON THE DEATH OF FRIENDS IN CHILDHOOD by DONALD JUSTICE THE POET AT SEVEN by DONALD JUSTICE MARY AND GABRIEL by RUPERT BROOKE THE STORY OF SEVENTY-SIX by WILLIAM CULLEN BRYANT SONG OF THE RABBITS OUTSIDE THE TAVERN by ELIZABETH JANE COATSWORTH |
