THE WEATHER, by KATHERINE SHEPARD First Line: I need brutal unrhythmical words to say this Last Line: What does the weather mean to such as we! Subject(s): Weather | ||||||||
I need brutal unrhythmical words to say this -- Why do you forever gabble about the weather? You who loll in cars or sit in the shade Gambling at cards over a highball, Are forever mouthing about the weather, "A hot day!" "Another cold wet spell!" Bah! Let these complain of the weather -- The unemployed on the park benches at night, Ill-nourished children, hoeing in the sun, The nigger in the chain-gang, All through the stifling heat or the numbing cold. "Forever pampering the criminal," I hear you say with your cruel shrug... But who am I, to object to anything? I, who am one of you whom I despise! All I ask, though, is that you don't talk about the weather.
