OUTER DRIVE AT NIGHT (CHICAGO), by MARTHA F. SIMMONDS First Line: The waves dash at the piled stones in frenzy Last Line: I would drink deeply of this night. Subject(s): Chicago; Night; Bedtime | ||||||||
The waves dash at the piled stones in frenzy. They cannot reach us: They fall back, broken, Bleeding in jets of sullen foam. The sound of their anger follows: The tires sing an overtone On the pavement black and wet. The night is fresh and sweet with rain. The blossoms of the lights come out To be washed free of dust. We ride toward shining towers And blinking clusters of lights, Toward flowers and music and laughter Within thick walls. But I shall go in with the rain on my face, I shall hear the waves plunging, all evening long. Please linger here, a little. I would drink deeply of this night. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN |
