The sabres sing, the deep-bass guns resound, And Death is host, and Flesh is meeting-ground For shot and shell and bayonet and sword. A horde of allied men, a German horde, With salutations loud, join in the rout; The Serbs engage the Austrians in a bout; The Prussians with the Russians dance a "glide"; And black-skinned men, with nostrils flat and wide, Dance "grizzly bear," or maybe "Hottentot." The French and English waltz, the Turkeys "trot"; The scouting Birdmen do a minuet Among the Angels guarding heaven's dome. "Salute your partners! Give the bayonet!" Till up from Hell a Voice commands: "Come home!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY |
