GRANTCHESTER, by CAROLINE PARKER SMITH First Line: Like breaking surf, white clouds unfolding lie Last Line: His sowing, for man's infinite delight. Subject(s): Sonnet (as Literary Form) | |||
Like breaking surf, white clouds unfolding lie Etched with lines of fire on indigo blue Against ensuing twilight in a few Fantastic floating shapes that form and die (Clouds in a pageant guilded as they fly) While far below the river silvers through Lush fragrant grass a-sheen with evening dew, And swans' sharp silhouettes outline the sky. Thatched cottage windows glint with coming night The clock has stoppedtime's silent hours sleep Yet songs of Rupert Brook sing on and leap Into the mind. At Byron's Pool swift flight Of thought (the poet's mood) reflects to reap His sowing, for man's infinite delight. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI KNOTTED OAKS by CAROLINE PARKER SMITH |
