I AM TO HAVE A CHILD, by EDITH LIVINGSTON SMITH First Line: I am to have a child. Flesh of my flesh Last Line: Like to my own--as god would have it be. Subject(s): Mothers | ||||||||
I AM to have a child. Flesh of my flesh, Soul of my soul, and love of earthly love! In marvel of thanksgiving do I kneel To pledge that coming life to God above. The throbbing of my pulse shall live anew; Where I have stumbled she shall firmly tread; Where sin has dimmed my vision she shall see; Of my night's darkness she shall know no dread. In valleys my path led, but when I bear My Baby-one aloft no sight shall mar Her view beyond the hills where beauties lie That I see now, because I came afar. Wonder of wonders! Lift that gives increase, Spring to the winter and a child to me! Within the Future's pool I see a face Like to my own--as God would have it be. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MY MOTHER'S HANDS by ANDREW HUDGINS CONTINENT'S END by ROBINSON JEFFERS IN THE 25TH YEAR OF MY MOTHER'S DEATH by JUDY JORDAN THE PAIDLIN' WEAN by ALEXANDER ANDERSON BLASTING FROM HEAVEN by PHILIP LEVINE TO BAYARD TAYLOR by SIDNEY LANIER |
