THE MERCIFUL SHORE, by                     Poet's Biography
First Line: You who draw into yourself each depth / of my mind-heart

You who draw into yourself each depth
of my mind-heart,
you who make virginal and clear
everyday words, rusted drachmas,
accept my letters: thus
the shore is merciful to the raft.

I'll write to you on the most radiant days
and on the cursed days,
on days when the heart is triumphant
and on days when the heart is mute,
when that suspicion slithers up and nails us:
Has everything already been written?
