THE SINGING TOWER, by ELEANOR STIMMEL First Line: Majestic beauty! Pride of southern state! Last Line: "to pause, and ""take thy shoes from off thy feet." Subject(s): Southern States; Trees; South (u.s.) | ||||||||
Majestic beauty! Pride of southern state! What master mind conceived a thing so great? On you high eminence, alone, you stand As mighty monarch o'er a subject land. Built for the ages ever to abide, With love o'erflowing for a nation wide, The sons of sons, in awe, will point the grave Of him, who of his gracious bounty gave This gracious gift. A people proud acclaim, And chimes ring out the praises of his name. What dreamer caught the light of ancient glory And dared to tell, in brass, creation's story; Whose fingers wove your delicate designs, Your marble grills, those upward soaring lines That lift your soul, in golden notes, on high To swell the angelic chorus of the sky, Whose music charms the heart as gentle showers Awake to joyousness the thirsty flowers? Nobly you stand, O peerless Singing Tower Within your sanctuary -- your greenwood bower, Where tender flowers may fear no wanton raid And lovely, little wings fly unafraid, While in your pool, in pink, exquisite dress, Flamingos gaze upon their loveliness. Beauty you share and song -- your priceless dower. We honor thee, O peerless Singing Tower. If, pilgrim dear, you e'er should pass this way In quest, perchance, of happy holiday, Draw humbly near and -- 'twould be very meet To pause, and "take thy shoes from off thy feet." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE MYSTIC RIVER by GALWAY KINNELL ENTERING THE SOUTH by LUCILLE CLIFTON SNAPSHOTS OF THE COTTON SOUTH by FRANK MARSHALL DAVIS JULY IN GEORGY by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON O SOUTHLAND! by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON MY SOUTH: 1.
