INTERCESSIONAL, 1898, by MCCREADY SYKES First Line: Godkin the righteous, known of old Last Line: Godkin, forgive thy country's flag. Subject(s): Godkin, Edwin Lawrence (1831-1902); New York Evening Post (newspaper) | ||||||||
Godkin the Righteous, known of old, Priest of the nation's moral health; Within whose Post we daily read The gospel of the rights of wealth; Great Evening Post, be with us yet, Lest we forget; lest we forget. The Tribune drools; the Sun is vile; The Journal and the World are lies; Alone thy Post speaks forth the truth Not humble, but divinely wise. Omniscient Post, don't leave us yet, Lest we forget; lest we forget. Far East our navy swats the foe; Manila falls beneath our fire; We're tempted, Larry, to exult But chide us with thy caustic ire. Great Evening Post, reprove us yet, Lest we forget; lest we forget. If, proud of Dewey, we cheer his name, And count the ships the Spaniards lost, Such boastings as our fathers used Benighted folks without the Post; Godkin, be quick; remind us yet, Lest we forget; lest we forget. For Yankee heart that puts her trust In twenty-inch guns and armor plate, And recognizeth not that all Save Godkinare degenerate; For licking Spain and wicked brag; Godkin, forgive thy country's flag. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BAVARIAN GENTIANS by DAVID HERBERT LAWRENCE MUIOPOTMOS, OR THE FATE OF THE BUTTERFLIE by EDMUND SPENSER ONCE & EVER by JOSEPH BEAUMONT THE NEW PROSERPINE by MATHILDE BLIND TWILIGHT AND DREAMS by WILLIAM STANLEY BRAITHWAITE PROVERBIAL PHILOSOPHY: INTRODUCTORY by CHARLES STUART CALVERLEY |
