THE STAFF THAT SUSTAINS, by ELKANAH EAST TAYLOR Poet's Biography First Line: To be contented is to choose the staff Last Line: That I may know your peace until life's end. | |||
To be contented is to choose the staff Of brave restraint to ever lean upon; It is to know the time to laugh, to sing, Or greet with smiling face noon, night, or dawn. It is to feel that somewhere beauty flowers Into a perfect bloom, even though men know Its mirrored loveliness alone is ours, Its shining, shattered petals pale as snow; For only those who daily lean for aid Upon restraint may find that by and by, Within the heart a firm foundation's laid To hold Love's house and find it satisfy. Oh, rugged staff, be mine as on I wend, That I may know your peace until life's end. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...POSSESSION by ELKANAH EAST TAYLOR UNDER A TELEPHONE POLE by CARL SANDBURG THE ANGEL, FR.
