THE GREATEST GIFT, by ANNIE J. TEEM First Line: The woman of this age, the present hour Last Line: "accept my gift -- ""a human life." Subject(s): Birth; Mothers; Child Birth; Midwifery | ||||||||
The woman of this age, the present hour, Is gaining in leadership and noted power. In art, drama, philosophy, ode, and song She has the plaudits of a famous throng. In science "a bit of radium illumes the way." The world accepts her gifts today, But the greatest gift is "a human life." This gift will live through aeons of years, Through the annals of history, through smiles and tears. Kinship with the divine, eternity will not efface; Abiding joy will at last reward the race. When your contributions are placed at the Master's feet, The one gift that will weld the universe and make complete, Will be the cosmic gift of "a human life." Hours spent in training your girl, your boy, Have their recompense in love free from alloy. Ideals of service, a forum built on human love, Lend strength that comes as grace from above. The lullaby may be a prayer in the purple glow When the shadows are dim and the lights are low. Accept my gift -- "a human life." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WHY I AM AFRAID OF TURNING THE PAGE by CATE MARVIN ACCIDENTS OF BIRTH by WILLIAM MEREDITH ONE FOR ALL NEWBORNS by THYLIAS MOSS CURRICULUM VITAE by LISEL MUELLER FOUND IN THE CABBAGE PATCH by LISEL MUELLER I MAY, I MIGHT, I MUST by MARIANNE MOORE |
