LILACS, by ROSE TILLOTSON First Line: A friend had failed me in some little thing Last Line: With purple lilacs, drenched in spring-sweet rain. Subject(s): Friendship - False Friends; Fair Weather Friends | ||||||||
A friend had failed me in some little thing. "I shall not trust again who thus could fail," I wrote in bitter haste, glanced outward where the rain, In darts of silver kissed the lilacs pale. And all the foolish rancor left my heart And Beauty filled it very full again. I slowly tore the written page apart And stood and watched my lilacs in the rain. I could not write unlovely words or feel An unmeant slight when just beyond the pane Beauty stood beckoning, my hurt to heal With purple lilacs, drenched in spring-sweet rain. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE GOLDEN ODES OF PRE-ISLAMIC ARABIA: LEBID by WILFRID SCAWEN BLUNT HOBOKEN, 1825 by ROBERT STEVENSON COFFIN VISIONS IN VERSE: 4.
