CERES, by NEIL TRACY First Line: See how the world lies manacled and bound Last Line: Torn by the wind from the rich hem of spring. Subject(s): Demeter; Spring; Ceres | ||||||||
See how the world lies manacled and bound; A prisoned goddess, ravaged, bosom heaving, Bound by the bands of black November's weaving, Weeping upon her ruin, with no sound Save that of cold, bright tears, that beat the ground. Thus will she ever lie, thus ever grieving The brave rich daughter of her heart's conceiving, Snatched by the black god of the silver hound. I long for locusts in the almond trees, The bright bronze pheasant, and the broken frieze Of nude white Nymphs and wild-haired Bacchantes, Upon whose breasts the lazy lizards cling Watching the moths like flakes of colouring Torn by the wind from the rich hem of spring. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE APPEASEMENT OF DEMETER by GEORGE MEREDITH ODE TO PROSERPINE by JOHN COWPER POWYS LOVE'S ATTRIBUTES by PIERRE DE RONSARD PERSEPHONEIA; A FRAGMENT: PROLOGUE by WILLIAM SHARP DEMETER AND PERSEPHONE by ALFRED TENNYSON A DAY AT CASTROGIOVANNI: 3.
