LISTENING, by
First Line: My ear was tuned to listen for your step
Last Line: Of this drear, aching void where lay my heart.
Subject(s): Death; Night; Silence; Sleep; Dead, The; Bedtime

My ear was tuned to listen for your step
Till listening was an instinct; and I sat
Tense, eager, straining every vibrant nerve
To greet the sound with glad expectancy.
But now the nights are long with silences,
Deep as the stillness of forgotten dead!
I sleep supine and nerveless as a clod,
Or, waking, fancy I am deep in death,
Perhaps less sad than is the poignant pain
Of this drear, aching void where lay my heart.
