THE STREETS OF TIME, by CHARLES A. TUPPER First Line: I wandered down the streets of time Last Line: Shone clear and still, glowed warm and still! Subject(s): History; Time; Historians | ||||||||
I wandered down the streets of time, Along the byways of the years, And witnessed scenes of sordid crime, Beset with tears and gnawing fears. I sauntered down the streets of time, In hand with coloured history; I saw the knight, I heard the chime Strike hard and free for liberty. I drifted down the streets of time, And met with hate and cold disdain; By many a door in distant clime I saw joy drain away to pain. I ventured down the streets of time, And nowhere in my search I saw A face untouched, devoid of grime, By some grim law, each wore a flaw. I wandered down the streets of time, And watched with shepherds on a hill. Behold, a star, in faultless climb, Shone clear and still, glowed warm and still! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BRITISH COUNTRYSIDE IN PICTURES by JAMES MCMICHAEL THE HISTORY OF MY LIFE by JOHN ASHBERY INITIAL CONDITIONS by MARVIN BELL THE DREAM SONGS: 290 by JOHN BERRYMAN THE EROTICS OF HISTORY by EAVAN BOLAND THEM AND US by LUCILLE CLIFTON YOUTH'S IMMORTALITY by GEORGE SANTAYANA |
