A COW, by JUDY VAN DER VEER First Line: Cows aren't clumsy Last Line: New-born -- and dead. Subject(s): Cows | ||||||||
Cows aren't clumsy -- My cow is slender And lovely as a deer. She is beautiful When she lifts her head Suddenly, in fear, Nostrils distended, Drinking the scent The wind has blown. Then it is, she looks Like something chiseled From a dark stone. Once I heard her call Into the silence Of a summer's night. When morning came, The look of her eyes Was a shining light. Oh, the soft look And the still look, As she turned her head To the little form Of her calf that lay New-born -- and dead. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOHNNY SPAIN'S WHITE HEIFER by HAYDEN CARRUTH MARSHALL WASHER by HAYDEN CARRUTH THE COWS AT NIGHT by HAYDEN CARRUTH THE DUN COW AND THE HAG by NORMAN DUBIE THE BIRTHDAY COW by EVE MERRIAM COWS by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER NIGHTINGALES by ROBERT SEYMOUR BRIDGES |
