THROUGH THE DARK, by CHARLES VAN LERBERGHE Poet's Biography First Line: Dusk's orisons / are sable swans Last Line: It is morn. Subject(s): Dusk; Night; Shadows; Bedtime | ||||||||
Dusk's orisons Are sable swans Or somber fay. Out of flowers, out of things, Out of us, each spirit springs: Our shadows they. They advance; the day recoils. They tangle twilight in their coils. They assemble and they call; Speedily, silently, they all Hover about, And their wings held out Make the night. But dawn in the stream Stirs in her dream And her torch kindles. She lifts into sight As the dream dwindles; Over the waves she gathers there The rising stir of her blonde hair And her eyes' wonder. Then in swift flight The shadows dart under; No one knows where they are borne. Into the stream? Into earth's breast? Into a flower? Into a stone? Into us? ... It will never be known. The wings droop in the air And come to rest. It is morn. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BREATH OF NIGHT by RANDALL JARRELL HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS NIGHT WITHOUT SLEEP by ROBINSON JEFFERS WORKING OUTSIDE AT NIGHT by DENIS JOHNSON POEM TO TAKE BACK THE NIGHT by JUNE JORDAN COOL DARK ODE by DONALD JUSTICE POEM TO BE READ AT 3 A.M by DONALD JUSTICE ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT by BOB KAUFMAN OFFERING TO A DEAD FRIEND by CHARLES VAN LERBERGHE |
