TIMGAD, by ELLEN VINTON First Line: A forest of pillars in a barren plain Last Line: Reaching so far into this desert land. Subject(s): Cities; Rome, Italy; Urban Life | ||||||||
A forest of pillars in a barren plain, Brown stone against the yellow sand. A mighty arch to Trajan's name, A market where the people came, Houses, temples and a theatre, Columns carved with beauty rare. Their roofs have vanished long ago: Fire, sword and sand have been the foe. Sad fate for a city so proud and fair, Centuries she lay beneath the sand Now she stands revealed -- Timgad: Southern outpost of Rome's mighty hand, Reaching so far into this desert land. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THINGS (FOR AN INDIAN) TO DO IN NEW YORK (CITY) by SHERMAN ALEXIE THE CITY REVISITED by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET TEN OXHERDING PICTURES: ENTERING THE CITY WITH BLISS-BESTOWING HANDS by LUCILLE CLIFTON THE CITY OF THE OLESHA FRUIT by NORMAN DUBIE DISCOVERING THE PHOTOGRAPH OF LLOYD, EARL, AND PRISCILLA by LYNN EMANUEL MY DIAMOND STUD by ALICE FULTON |
