SACRIFICIAL FIRES, by NEVA MCFARLAND WADHAMS First Line: Across the sunlit hills of dawn Last Line: And autumn's fires burn low. Subject(s): Trees | ||||||||
Across the sunlit hills of Dawn, As chill winds scurry by, Blaze Autumn's sacrificial fires Beneath a cloudless sky. The golden torch of cottonwoods, Red sumac's scarlet flail, The flaming plumes of maple trees Adown a woodland trail. The hollows where green shadows hid The glory of the sun Till Autumn calls to colors Her brave recruits -- one by one. The great procession marches on, Night breezes' trumpets blow, The silver starlight overhead, And Autumn's fires burn low. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE PROBLEM OF DESCRIBING TREES by ROBERT HASS THE GREEN CHRIST by ANDREW HUDGINS MIDNIGHT EDEN by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN REFLECTION OF THE WOOD by LEONIE ADAMS THE LIFE OF TREES by DORIANNE LAUX SCANDAL VANDALS by NEVA MCFARLAND WADHAMS |
