Soprano: UPON the rack of love despised I lay And one at midnight came to hush my groan With"Patience, brother, for at break of day Thou shalt forget"that word wrenched bone from bone. Contralto: I live,O God, my heart is beating still! Yea, this that walks and eats and sleeps, is I! What of the light that fled these ashes chill My soul of dreams? I live to see it die. Basso: To-night I weary of my book of doubt, Its rhymes and sciences of sneer and slime; I throw my casement wide where clear shine out God's seals still molten on the scrolls of Time. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND A BALLAD OF OLD POPE JOHN by THOMAS WALSH |
