TO MY BABY, by MARGERY STEVENS WARNER First Line: When first I held you in my arms Last Line: And now you've gone so far away. Subject(s): Babies; Infants | ||||||||
When first I held you in my arms, That day as dawn awoke the skies I looked beyond the vault above And prayed to Him that your dear eyes Would ne'er on aught but beauty look As through the years you made your way. I said -- Dear God I give thee thanks, For thou hast brought me joy today In trusting to my care this child. Please make me strong, yet gentle too, Then when the time comes I can say -- I gave the best in me to you. A babe you were just yesterday; And now you've gone so far away. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A POET TO HIS BABY SON by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON BABYHOOD by ELIZABETH AKERS ALLEN INFANCY by EDMUND JOHN ARMSTRONG BALLAD OF THE LAYETTE by WAYNE KOESTENBAUM A TOAST FOR LITTLE IRON MIKE by PAUL MARIANI THE PAMPERING OF LEORA by THYLIAS MOSS ONE FOR ALL NEWBORNS by THYLIAS MOSS IN THE THRIVING SEASON by LISEL MUELLER BEARING LEAVES AGAIN by DAVID IGNATOW |
