THE DESERTED HOUSE, by
First Line: Shadows interlaced the walk
Last Line: Stand aloof?
Subject(s): Houses, Deserted

Shadows interlaced the walk
Worn smooth like an old stone floor:
Starlings nested at its eaves;
Dog-wood came up to the door.

Peace peered out from quaint windows
High-set in a blank gray wall:
Moss-stained shingles marked the space
Morning shade fell from the tall

Oaks; their fluid tops wind-blown
On the morning sky like smoke:
Echoes of a lost dismay --
Outlines broke again, and broke.

Love had laid its solid beams,
Faith had hung its sturdy roof;
Why should such a house
Stand aloof?
