THE PETRIFIED FOREST, by MINNIE T. WEIR First Line: Great fallen monarchs of the forest lie Last Line: And gaze with thoughtful, wondering eyes? Subject(s): Forests; Woods | ||||||||
Great fallen monarchs of the forest lie In broken lengths upon the treeless plain, Close by those lone twin mountains, standing guard Like watchful sentinels above the slain. What mighty force of nature threw them down To lie for countless ages underneath the loam, And kept them hidden from the wind and rain Changing their oaken hearts to hearts of stone? What great upheaval threw them forth again To rest beneath these brazen prairie skies, That we, the children of another age may come And gaze with thoughtful, wondering eyes? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE PRINCESS WAKES IN THE WOOD by RANDALL JARRELL CHAMBER MUSIC: 20 by JAMES JOYCE ADVICE TO A FOREST by MAXWELL BODENHEIM A SOUTH CAROLINA FOREST by AMY LOWELL JOY IN THE WOODS by CLAUDE MCKAY IN BLACKWATER WOODS by MARY OLIVER |
