MAIN STREET IN A FOG, by ESTHER GRIFFIN WHITE First Line: The asphalt street gleams like a river black Last Line: Drapes car and taxi waiting in long lines. Subject(s): Fog; Towns; Haze | ||||||||
The asphalt street gleams like a river black With virgin snow piled softly to its edge While cement curbing glitters as the sedge When white with frost. A passing peddler's pack Sags, soggy wet, across his bony back As he slinks past the corner cop. The ledge Of roof and window's dripping with the dredge Of cloud and chimney -- white lights leave a track Of rippling pallor and the shop-fronts show Their brilliant wares as Beauty through a veil Lures by concealment. The electric signs, Deep orange, waver ghost-like through the glow Of city's night while opalescence pale Drapes car and taxi waiting in long lines. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS BELLEVUE EXCHANGE by NORMAN DUBIE THE SEA FOG by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN THE WAYSIDE WEEDS by ESTHER GRIFFIN WHITE THE LITTLE BOY LOST, FR.
