OUT OF THE EMBERS (SIOUX), by FANNIE BARRIER WILLIAMS Poet's Biography First Line: Embers, embers, in the night Last Line: Embers, embers, keep your glow. Subject(s): History; Memory; Past; Historians | ||||||||
Embers, Embers, in the night, Glow again with flaring light. Burn the purple into crimson, Lift the curtain for our sight. Once again we see the past Like a vision calm and vast Warriors intrepid, bold, Craving neither land nor gold; Women who could rule a home When their lords abroad must roam; Who could make the rude skin tent With home-spirit redolent; Youth and maid with eyes downcast Wander in the misty past; All-subdued by Love's mad flame, Unpossessed by fear nor shame; Fighting, feasting, chase, and dance Challenge, beckon, and entrance, While the tent with well-spread board Offers welcome to its hoard; Stately worship passes by "Waken Tanka"Mystery Thralls the spirit, bows the will, Girds the soul for pending ill. Embers, Embers, keep your glow. In the night wind's eerie flow Send far forth this lovely vision Embers, Embers, keep your glow. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE BRITISH COUNTRYSIDE IN PICTURES by JAMES MCMICHAEL THE HISTORY OF MY LIFE by JOHN ASHBERY INITIAL CONDITIONS by MARVIN BELL THE DREAM SONGS: 290 by JOHN BERRYMAN THE EROTICS OF HISTORY by EAVAN BOLAND THEM AND US by LUCILLE CLIFTON A DAKOTA IDYL by FANNIE BARRIER WILLIAMS |
