WINTER, by JESSIE E. WILLIAMS First Line: In vain, majestic sepulcher Last Line: Of what avail -- of what avail? Subject(s): Winter | ||||||||
In vain, majestic sepulcher, Thou tomb that holds, entranced and deep, The earth's sweet life in dreamless sleep! What though the wandering mint and myrrh And every summer reveler Have died from frosted plain and steep! In vain thy ancient dark retreat -- Along each shadowy forest trail, Ghostly and delicate and frail, Fresh loveliness -- miraculous -- Will summon strength like Lazarus, And then thy walls, thy winding sheet -- Of what avail -- of what avail? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...LOOKING EAST IN THE WINTER by JOHN HOLLANDER WINTER DISTANCES by FANNY HOWE WINTER FORECAST by JOSEPHINE JACOBSEN AT WINTER'S EDGE by JUDY JORDAN CHAMBER MUSIC: 34 by JAMES JOYCE |
