FUTILITY, by MARY M. WOOLEY First Line: Blasted hopes like tattered clouds of gray Last Line: Of retrospection. | |||
Blasted hopes like tattered clouds of gray Shut out the vision of what might have been. And my heart, cut on the jagged bits Of broken dreams, beats only Because life endures. There is no pattern, no design, and yet; Somehow I still recall the Thread of gold, that used to weave An undertone so rich and warm; That life was pregnant with desire To meet its challenge. But now That thread is lost, and the Dead Sea of Memory Washes her bitter fruit upon the shore Of retrospection. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ECHO by WALTER JOHN DE LA MARE TO SIR GODFREY KNELLER by JOHN DRYDEN A BROOK IN THE CITY by ROBERT FROST AFTER AUGHRIM by ARTHUR GERALD GEOGHEGAN |
