TIME HAS THREE PALACES, by RACHEL LUMPKIN WYLY First Line: Time has three palaces that she will loan Last Line: Are mingling as they near eternity. Subject(s): Time | ||||||||
Time has three palaces that she will loan To every one, their paths are wide and free, And I have used them till they seem my own, Each friendly gate has welcome smiles for me. There's one that has a garden, green with trees, Where mignonette and thyme are blossoming, And in that land of treasured memories I live again in days of youthful spring. But should I tire of dreamy yesterdays -- Though vanished joys in retrospect entreat -- The palace present quickly comes and lays Its tasks and pleasures down before my feet. I take the joys the present brings, but still With hopefulness in my far-questing eyes, I gaze through distance over a sunlit hill And wonder where the future palace lies. But time is flowing on, relentless, fast, And soon one palace only there will be, For trails that led to Future, Now and Past Are mingling as they near eternity. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ELEVEN EYES: FINAL SECTION by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: COME OCTOBER by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: HOME by LYN HEJINIAN THE FATALIST: TIME IS FILLED by LYN HEJINIAN SLOWLY: I FREQUENTLY SLOWLY WISH by LYN HEJINIAN ALL THE DIFFICULT HOURS AND MINUTES by JANE HIRSHFIELD A DAY IS VAST by JANE HIRSHFIELD FROM THIS HEIGHT by TONY HOAGLAND OTHER SPRINGS by RACHEL LUMPKIN WYLY |
