TO A FALSE LADY, by ANONYMOUS First Line: When softly gathered twilight o'er the silent air Last Line: With which thou didst unchanging love requite.' Subject(s): Love - Unrequited;unfaithfulness; Infidelity;adultery;inconstancy | ||||||||
From the Italian WHEN softly gathered twilight o'er the silent air, And out from darkness rose the first bright star, A gentle lady came my solitude to share. I seemed to know her; and she was so heav'nly fair That, gazing, I was hers; and near or far, To honor her, I followed where she went: and then Ah well! I only pray: "God give thee, when Thou art as I remain, the same sad plight With which thou didst unchanging love requite." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A RITUAL AS OLD AS TIME ITSELF by PETER JOHNSON THE RING AND THE CASTLE by AMY LOWELL SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: MRS.
