WHO KNOWS?, by
First Line: What does the south wind tender say to thee
Last Line: Who knows, who knows?

WHAT does the south wind tender say to thee,
Rosebud red, rosebud fair?
What does the sunbeam golden say to thee,
Darting here, darting there?
What does the pearly dewdrop say to thee?
The perfumed air,
The moon's pale ray—
What do they say?

I hold thee close that I may hear thine answer,
Rosebud small, rosebud sweet;
That I may catch each word till all thine answer
Be complete, quite complete;
That I may catch each low and tender whisper
Passing fleet.
Tell me, I pray,
What do they say?

No fragrant whisper stirs thy crimson petals,
No sigh, no faintest sigh;
Perhaps they fold the secret safe among them,
Those leaves, as warm they lie
Around thy heart, and till they open widely
By-and-by—
Safe hid away,
There it shall lay.

And when at last in full-blown, dewy splendor,
Bud no more, flower rare,
Shalt thou then waft thy closely hidden secret
On the warm Summer air,
Until some cloudlet near the sunset golden,
Still and fair,
The secret hears,
And melts to tears?

Perhaps thou wilt impart it, rosebud tender,
To some bird singing near—
Flinging out his joyous song, full-throated,
Loud and sweet, loud and clear.
And will it be the burden of his song then,
Flower dear?
O silent rose,
Who knows, who knows?
